When I began consulting for a popular U.S.-based grocery store, I noticed they already had a rewards system in place, linked to customer phone numbers via their billing CRM. But there was a clear problem: less than 10% of walk-in customers were actually signing up. Why? Because the sign-up process was manual and depended on the checker asking the customer at checkout — something that often got skipped during busy hours.

💡 The Solution: A Self-Serve, QR-Based Loyalty Signup System
To fix this, I built and deployed a custom QR-based web app embedded within the store’s website. It allowed customers to sign up for the loyalty program directly from their phones — without any help from the staff.
We strategically placed sign holders with QR codes at every billing counter. While waiting in line, shoppers had a few minutes of idle time — perfect for encouraging a quick scan and sign-up.

To sweeten the deal, we offered a $5 joining bonus exclusively for those who signed up via the QR system.
